Coloring is more than just a great way to spend time with your kids — there are health benefits that include lower anxiety, take away stress and improve cognitive functioning. It’s no wonder why kids love the fun and freedom of coloring. The big surprise, though, is the new popularity of coloring books as stress relievers. Take a look at the scientific evidence in support of coloring. The Atlantic reported on the health benefits of coloring, specifically citing a host of research studies on the role of coloring in relieving stress. Among the studies they cited was the journal Palliative & Supportive Care which showed that art can greatly improve coping resources. The journal Art Therapy found in 2012 that patients were able to lower their anxiety levels through simple, repetitive activities that included coloring in mandalas.
All of the aforementioned benefits certainly help kids prepare for school and different kinds of classroom activities. However, there are certain things that they can learn with the help of coloring pages that can help them develop their reading and math skills. The simple act of coloring can help a child learn about lines, shapes, forms, perspective, boundaries and patterns. By learning to recognize all of those things, especially different patterns, kids actually develop pre-reading and pre-math skills, which will undoubtedly help them later in school. By focusing on coloring different drawings of a coloring page, kids learn the skill of patience.

It was that glorious part of the day when the school doors were thrown open and you rushed out onto the playground to do whatever you pleased, and no teacher or kid could get in your way.
